Discipline and class conduct

v     Students are considered tardy when the bell rings and not in your seat, the tardy policy will follow the school handbook.

v     No soda or snacks in the room.  When we do eat in this class, please keep in mind that everyone should be able to sample the food prepared, so please don’t take large amounts until everyone has had a chance to try it.  Also when we have extras, do not leave class to take to teachers and other students, if you want to take a sample with you at the end of the hour that is fine.

v     No cell phones, CD players, radios or other electrical devices.

v     Be respectful of the equipment; if you break you pay for the replacement cost.  In this class the proper use will be demonstrated before you will work with the equipment.  Desks are to be used correctly, no sitting on tabletops, sewing machines or counter tops.

v     Students are not to use vulgar, profane or inappropriate language according to the Kirby Book Of Improper Words.

v     Manners are important so remember to keep the volume of your voice below normal when working with groups.  A pet peeve of mine are those food hogs.  We are on a budget for this class and even though I want you to eat all that we cook each time, please be sure that everyone in the class gets a chance to try what we have prepared.

v     Come to class everyday prepared with a writing utensil, paper and books (everyday).  NO supplies will be provided for you, it is your responsibility to be prepared.  You will also need an apron, but remember that it will be washed frequently.  For those of you with shoulder length hair or longer, it needs to be pulled back on the days that we are in the kitchens.

v     Late work is not tolerated at South Shelby; therefore point value of assignment will drop by 50% the first day late, then to 0 the next day.  Late work should be dated as to the assigned completion date or you may lose more points then necessary.  Late work is always a problem, so get your work turned in on time.

v     If you are absent, be sure to write on the papers turned in on the top of the page.  Your paper may accidentally be considered late if missing those words.  You are allowed to make up lab work at home, prepare a similar item at home, fill out a missed lab sheet and bring enough for all to sample.  The make up lab will be worth a total of 80% of the original lab.

v     Grades will be based on all work turned in and class participation.  At the end of the grading period grades will be rounded up, if necessary based on the value of the first decimal point.

v     Points will not be given to work that does not include the name, class, hour and date in the upper left hand corner.

v     When handing in papers, please put in the basket marked to grade.  If you fail to do this there is no guarantee that the paper will be graded and recorded.

v     This class is very much a hands on course, but we will still have traditional lectures, group activities and labs (both the eating kind and the science type).

v     You will need to read on your own.

v     Grades are posted on the school web page, please check it for an update on grades.

Login Hints:

  1. Student Name:  You must use the following format: Last Name, First Name Class hour number

For example if Fred Flinstone was taking College Survival, which is 7th hour your  login name would look like this: Flinstone, Fred 7

(Notice I capitalized the first letters and I put a comma and then a space. You must do it this way or it will not pull up your grades. You must enter your names as they appear on the grade records at school.)

2.      Your Student ID Code is the password you use to login to the computer network at school.

To see Fred Flinstone's grades as an example, type 1234 as the Student ID Code.

Assessments and Evaluation

Traditional types of assessments are done in this class, testing worksheets.  There are also a number of assessments done involving group work, individual projects, lab time, etc.  I will not ask that you do any type of work that I do not plan on grading.  If it is worth your time to do it is worth my time to assess.  At the end of a grading period grades will be rounded up, if necessary based on the value of the first decimal place.
