Shelby County R-IV - Four Day School Week Survey #2

Shelby County R-IV - Four Day School Week Survey #2

The Shelby County R-IV School District is requesting stakeholders to complete a second survey regarding a possible change to a four day school week calendar.  The Board of Education requested that the district look into this calendar option last year, and would like to conduct a second survey for comparison as we consider this calendar option for the 2023-24 school year.  The district gained a great deal of valuable feedback in a survey on this topic that was conducted in March 2022.  The district and Board of Education have continued to discuss this calendar option and feedback we have received to gain a better understanding of how this type of schedule would work at Shelby County R-IV.

We have reached out to several schools that have adopted this calendar option to discuss challenges they have faced as well as the successes the move has created.  Attached is an updated information document related to the four day school week calendar.  Currently, there are 146 schools in Missouri that have approved or are currently using a four day week schedule, with several others actively considering the switch.  We anticipate the number of schools to grow to over 160 by the 2023-24 school year.  The number of planned hours of attendance will remain the same as our current calendar, which has over the maximum of 1,104 hours of attendance scheduled.  By scheduling over 1,104 hours, the district would not be required to make up days missed due to inclement weather.  The morning bus routes would run at the same times as they do this year.  The evening routes would run about 20 minutes later than their current times.  The district is also drafting plans to offer a voluntary “Monday Academy” for students who may need additional academic support.  The district will participate in extra-curricular activities on Mondays.  Practices for school sponsored activities will generally be after 3:00 pm.  Most planned co-curricular activities on nonscheduled attendance days will be during the afternoon.  The district will continue to provide shuttle buses on Mondays with no school scheduled for students attending Monday Academy or practices as needed.  Please refer to that attached document for more general information regarding the four day school week calendar.

We plan to use information from this survey as well as the one done last March to make a decision on this topic.  Thank you for completing the survey and for your continued support for the Shelby County R-IV School District.
