The NENANA ICE CLASSIC! This is a classic! In Nenana, Alaska there is a river that is frozen. Since 1917, people have made bets as to when the ice would melt and the river would flow. It began with a group of railroad engineers. The winner that year took home $800. Today, people all over the world place bets at $3.00 each. A tripod is set up on the frozen water. A cable connects it to a clock that is on the shore. Folks bet as to when the ice will melt, the river will flow, the tripod will fall, tripping the clock and the time will stop. The person with the closest time wins all the money. It's Alaska's greatest guessing game! Last year, the pot was $233, 591. And at 6:57 pm on May 2, 2022, when the tripod fell and the clock stopped. Room 148 did a little research and watched some YouTube videos of this fun event and are making our predictions. Students guessing the day they predict the ice will melt. On April 3 the ice was 30.8 inches. We have looked at long-range temps and past "ice breakings." It is MOST COMMON between April 20 and May 20. It has been as early as April 10. Students are predicting to the nearest minute. Keep in mind, that Alaska is warmer than usual this year. For more information go to nenanaiceclassic.com Here are some photos of students making their predictions.
