Dear Parents/Guardians of Shelby County R-IV School District,
Does your child/student have access to a cell phone whether it be theirs, yours, or someone else’s? Does your child/student have access to social media or gaming devices that allow them to communicate with others? If so, regardless of the age of your children, we strongly encourage you to attend the BeAlert presentation happening at South Shelby next week to learn more about ways you can keep your child/student safe.
Russ Tuttle is the president and founder of The Stop Trafficking Project®. He uses his strengths of communication, leadership, team development, and compassion to end domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST). He is an active member of several coalitions and task forces in Kansas and Missouri.
Russ is also the creator and director of BeAlert®, which is the prevention and awareness strategy of The Stop Trafficking Project®. His presentations are designed to:
1) educate and empower students and
2) guide adults from awareness to action

The next day, on November 19, there will be 4 educational assemblies presented at an age appropriate level for K-12 students in an effort to educate them, to empower them, and to keep them safe regarding “online” dangers. All students, regardless of age, can be subjected to dangers if they are online, or using any type of social media. The presentations on Wednesday, November 19, during the school day will be for students and staff only.
Thank you for your cooperation and continued support in helping us educate your children to help them be successful and to keep them safe. The safety of our students is our top priority.
BE ALERT STUDENT PRESENTATIONS
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Despite the positive aspects of social media, there are still an abundance of risk factors, such as privacy endangerment, exploitation, and online harassment. All these negatives make social platforms a dangerous place for children, regardless of their age.
The primary goal of the BeAlert student presentations is to educate and empower your child/student regarding online dangers including, but not limited to the following:
Cyberbullying
Exploitation of vulnerabilities: loneliness, isolation, depression, sexting
Invasion of privacy
Identify theft
Risk of drug abuse
Your child seeing offensive images and message (possibly of a sexual nature)
The presence of a stranger who may be there to “groom” them
We recognize the right of parents to choose to opt their child out of the age-appropriate presentation. If you choose to do so, please contact the office in the building where he/she attends, no later than Monday, November 17.
Respectfully,
Dr. Billy Daleske
Superintendent
